Band Camp 2022 Tutors Announced

The UniBrass Foundation has announced the star-studded line up of tutors that will lead its second annual Band Camp this summer.

Participants will enjoy sectionals, full band rehearsals, and other musical activities (plus plenty of socials) with the team that includes returning Band Camp legends and some new faces.

David Thornton returns as the course’s Musical Director, to shape the week’s musical progress and direct the ‘National Universities Brass Band’ in concerts and informal performances across Sheffield. He will also lead the euphonium and baritone section.

Also returning are Brett Baker (trombones), Steve Jones (percussion), and Helen Minshall (basses).

Ahead of the course, Helen Minshall said: “I’m really looking forward to Band Camp as I had such a wonderful time last year. It was great to work with young people full of energy and enthusiasm, and be able to share my skills and expertise with them all.”

Completing the line up are three musicians making their Band Camp debuts, but that need no introduction. The cornets will be mentored by Stephanie Binns and Anna Hughes-Williams, while Jonathan Bates will take the flugel and horn section.

No stranger to UniBrass, Jonathan said: “I’m most looking forward to meeting a new generation of horn players and feeling nostalgic about (and attempting to keep up with) the antics associated with being a university student!”

With their combined experience as performers and educators with some of the world’s leading bands and music organisations, the tutoring team are sure to make their mark on Band Camp 2022, and The UniBrass Foundation looks forward to working with them all.

Also announced are the three course performances. Audiences can hear the National Universities Brass Band perform in Chapel Town village hall (Friday 26th August), Buxton Pavilion Gardens (Saturday 27th) and Sheffield Cathedral (Monday 29th).

UniBrass Band Camp takes place from Wednesday 24th - Monday 29th August, based at Hesley Wood Scout Camp near Sheffield. There are still places available for musicians aged 18-25 or in higher education. Visit unibrass.co.uk/bandcamp for more information and to sign up.
