The Shield Section will be judged by the fabulous Lauren Chinn and Chris Thomas!

Lauren Chinn is a brass performer and educator with over a decade of experience at the highest level of banding and youth music education. She has been a member of Flowers Band since 2015, during the band’s most successful period, including their National Championships victory in 2024. Now holding the Flugelhorn seat, she has established a strong reputation as a soloist, features on the band’s latest CD, and was awarded Best Flugelhorn at the 2024 Brass in Concert Championships.

In addition to performing, Lauren is part of the band’s creative team, contributing to the design and delivery of their Brass in Concert programmes. A former member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, she now serves on its pastoral team, supporting and nurturing the next generation of brass musicians.

Joining Lauren will be acclaimed trombonist Chris Thomas.

Chris started playing at the age of eleven, and following initial tuition from Mr Richard Nash and a brief spell in The Tredegar Junior Band, Chris was appointed principal trombone of the Sun Life Band at the age of seventeen. A period of travel that took him all over the world saw him forge a reputation as one of the finest amateur performers of his generation. He has presented masterclasses and performed in concert halls as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Japan and throughout Europe. In addition, he has performed as featured soloist at the National Brass Band Championships Gala Concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

In July 2000, Chris was appointed principal trombone of the Cory Band and, with them, has amassed a total of four National Championships wins, seven British Open wins, and six European Championship wins.
