The Charity

The UniBrass Foundation

The UniBrass Foundation is a registered charity in England and Wales supporting brass banding at the university level. Brass band music-making activities have many beneficial effects on health and well-being - critically important during sometimes stressful university studies! The charity's work supports a link between music-making at school and continued participation in music after university. We believe university brass banding is important to sustain the heritage of the brass band movement and helps young people to develop skills that will be useful in other areas of their life and future career.

Our Recent Work

Our work has led to a number of new university bands being set up, and many more thriving. The contest has also encouraged the writing of over 20 new compositions for brass band, signs that the contest is providing a platform to encourage new brass banding talent to flourish.

In recent years the Foundation has run a Student Conducting Course, an upcoming summer school, COVID support sessions for university brass bands and more. Each year, our work is summarised in our Trustees Annual Report and Accounts, available from the Charity Commission

In 2014, the UniBrass Foundation was set up as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) registered in England and Wales (reg. no. 1,159,359) with the Charitable Objects:

To advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art of the brass band movement, primarily but not exclusively by organising an annual university brass band championships of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The Foundation is managed by a team of charity trustees, who are responsible for guiding the charity's work, supporting the contest, and often working on individual projects. We are governed by our constitution, bye-laws and policies.

Support Us

There's many ways to help us support the future of brass banding. We rely on donations and the work of volunteers to do our work, but you can also help us by spreading the word, "give as you shop" options, and joining our lottery.
